The Practical Magic Hub

Learn to think critically, to read closely, and to understand literary history.

If you have ever read a Dorothy Parker book review, or any of her columns in The New Yorker for that matter, you’d know how easy it can be for a reviewer to cynically and humorously dismiss a piece of fiction. Yet, somehow, Dorothy Parker still has a way of making you want to read a book, even if she didn’t particularly like it. In true Dorothy Parker fashion (though in a far less sardonic way), we do our best to provide clear and concise summaries of the books we review, along with light hearted commentary on structure, characters, and stylistic choices. We hope to provide our readers with entertaining feedback about our book selections in a way that makes it easy to decide for yourself if a book is right for you, while avoiding any false praise or insincere flattering. We do our best to honestly review all of our selections and allow you to make a pragmatic decision about whether or not to add a book to your personal library.

Whether you are new to the study of literature or a seasoned vet, we provide a range of resources to help you develop critical thinking skills and other foundational skills necessary to effectively analyze literature. Some of the foundations of literary studies include: the study of genres, which makes it easy to differentiate different genres and literary devices; literary theory, which allows you to apply different theoretical lenses to a reading (for example, reading The Brothers Karamazov through a Marxist lens and seeing what you can uncover); or by understanding the foundations of different literary movements and periods like Romanticism, Renaissance literature, or Postmodern literature. Developing these skills will allow you to interpret texts in exciting ways, to develop close reading skills, and gain a stronger grasp of literature as an artform.

Here at NC we put a particular focus on analyzing poetry and learning about poets, and we view poetics as a powerful and effective way to connect with ourselves and with others. From the exploration of John Keates’s captivating odes, to analyses of Forugh Farrokhzad’s Persian feminist poetry, our poetry articles are here to put you in touch with new ideas, emotions, and experiences in an authentic and heartfelt way. Each month we focus on one poet and explore their life, poems, and aesthetics as a writer so our readers can gain a better understanding of poetic figures and the history of the lyric genre in a digestible way.
